This Privacy Policy describes how Lutarea ("we", "us", or "our") handles information in connection with the mobile application Your Bookroom (the "App") for Apple iOS and iPadOS. The App uses the bundle identifier com.lutarea.yourbooks; the optional home screen widget extension uses com.lutarea.yourbooks.ReadingWidget.
1. Summary
Your Bookroom is designed to store and process your library and reading data on your device. Your live book database (SwiftData) is not synced to Lutarea servers or to CloudKit. Book files you import stay in the App's sandbox (and converted caches on device). When you export a backup, the App may write JSON files to iCloud Drive → Lutarea BACKUPS (Apple's shared container for Lutarea apps on your Apple ID) or to a folder you choose in Settings; Lutarea does not receive the contents of those files on its own servers. We do not operate our own backend database for core app content in order to sell advertising profiles based on your reading, and we do not embed third-party advertising or analytics SDKs in the App.
2. Data we process
Depending on how you use the App, categories of information may include:
- Library metadata — titles, authors, descriptions, ratings, reviews, reading status, dates started or finished, series names and numbers, collections, mood tags, custom tags, estimated page counts, and similar fields you enter or that are extracted from imported files.
- Book files and covers — EPUB, PDF, TXT, and other supported formats you import; converted copies (for example MOBI or FB2 to EPUB); cover images extracted or chosen locally; files stored under the App's managed directories on device.
- Reading progress and preferences — current position, last locator, per-book reader settings (theme, font, spacing, scroll mode), and session timing used for statistics.
- Highlights and notes — text selections, highlight colors, and note text attached to highlights in EPUB, PDF, or TXT.
- Statistics and goals — reading time sessions, streaks, yearly book goals, daily minute goals, and derived charts shown in Settings.
- Achievements — unlock records for in-app milestones stored locally in SwiftData.
- Security settings (optional) — app passcode preference and biometric lock; passcode material is stored in the device Keychain; Face ID or Touch ID is handled by iOS when you enable it.
- Import and export — when you import files, add books from URLs, or export/import JSON backups, data is read, written, or converted on your device. Exported backups may be stored in iCloud Drive Lutarea BACKUPS or a folder you pick.
- Optional iCloud Drive backup — when iCloud is available, export saves JSON backups to the shared Lutarea container
iCloud.com.lutarea.backupsunder Your Bookroom Backups (visible in Files as Lutarea BACKUPS). Lutarea does not receive backup contents on its own servers. If iCloud is unavailable, the App may use a local sandbox fallback path as described in Settings. - Reader features (optional) — text-to-speech uses Apple's on-device speech APIs; dictionary lookup uses Apple's reference library UI; translation of selected text may use Apple's Translation framework when available on your device. These features process the text you select locally or through Apple system services, not through Lutarea servers.
- Home screen widget (optional) — if you add the "Reading Now" widget, the App writes a limited on-device snapshot (for example current book title, progress, and a cover thumbnail) into an Apple App Group container shared only between the App and its widget extension. This snapshot is not sent to Lutarea servers. Widget content may be visible on your home screen without opening the App.
- Plan tier (local) — the App may store a Free or Pro plan flag locally (for example in app preferences). We do not operate a Lutarea account server for plan status in the current version.
- Diagnostics visible to Apple — if you opt in to share analytics with Apple as part of your device settings, Apple may collect crash or usage diagnostics according to Apple's policies.
3. Purposes and legal bases (EEA, UK, and similar)
Where the GDPR or similar laws apply, we rely on appropriate bases such as:
- Performance of a contract / steps at your request — providing the App and its features you choose to enable.
- Legitimate interests — securing the App, preventing abuse, and improving stability, where not overridden by your rights.
- Consent — where required for optional permissions, as managed by iOS.
4. Storage and retention
Data is stored locally using Apple's on-device persistence technologies (including SwiftData as implemented in the App). The widget uses a separate App Group storage area on the same device for a small JSON snapshot and optional cover image; it does not copy your full library into the widget. We do not receive a continuous feed of your book contents on Lutarea servers because you use the App.
Retention is controlled by you: you can delete books in the App (which removes associated files where applicable), reset data where offered, or uninstall the App (which also removes the widget). Exported JSON backups in iCloud Drive or elsewhere are files you manage yourself. If we introduce optional cloud or account sync in a future version, we will update this Policy before or when that feature becomes available.
5. Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. Data may be processed by:
- Apple — as platform provider (App Store, device security, WidgetKit, App Groups, iCloud Drive for optional JSON backups, speech, translation, and dictionary system frameworks where you use those features).
- Law and safety — if we are legally required to disclose information, or to protect rights and safety, subject to applicable law.
When you share a review or quote card using system share sheets, you choose the recipient or app; Lutarea does not receive that share action.
6. International transfers
Because core App data stays on your device in the current version, international transfer issues mainly arise if you choose to store exported backups in a cloud service you use, or if Apple processes diagnostics or translation requests you initiate under your device settings. Those services are governed by their own terms.
7. Security
The App supports optional passcode and biometric lock. You are responsible for keeping your device and Apple ID secure. DRM-protected commercial ebooks from other stores are not supported in the current version; only files you own or may legally import are intended for use.
8. Your rights
Depending on your location, you may have rights to access, rectify, delete, restrict, port, or object to certain processing of your personal data. Many requests can be fulfilled directly in the App (including deletion of books and exported files you control). You may also contact us using the email below.
9. Children
The App is not directed at children under the age where parental consent is required in your jurisdiction. Do not use the App for children below that age without appropriate parental authority and compliance with local rules.
10. Changes
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will adjust the "Last updated" date above. Where required by law, we will provide additional notice.
